{Guest Post} Felt Dinosaur Dress-Up Set

I've asked Dyan from And Next Comes L to guest post for me today.  I learned about her blog a few months ago when I started blogging and it's just plain awesome!  She has so many great ideas for fun and learning.  My two favorite posts of hers are her Invisible Letters Sensory Bins and her Gruffalo Inspired Sensory Board - they are SO creative!
Hi!  My name is Dyan and I write the blog And Next Comes L.  I am a stay at home mom to two boys, J (age 3.5) and K (20 months), but I also teach piano out of my home.  I love to dabble in all things creative, but my blog focuses primarily on fun, educational sensory activities and homemade toys, like activities for the felt board or quiet books.
I am so thrilled to be guest posting on Fun at Home With Kids today, especially since I have been following/stalking/admiring Asia's blog for awhile.  I stumbled across her blog when it had a mere 200 or so Facebook fans and instantly fell in love with it.
I have been wanting to make a dress up activity for the felt board for a long time, but I didn't want to do the typical, boring dress up doll.  However, I have come across dress up bears, but I was still longing for something different.  Something that would really appeal to my boys.  I was also looking for something cute and fun like the Mix and Match Monsters that I made.  J loves those monsters.

Then it dawned on me: dinosaurs!  What kid doesn't love dinosaurs?!  So I came up with this dinosaur dress up activity for the felt board.

As is my usual style, I cut everything free hand and hot glued pieces where needed.  It was also a great way to use up some of my felt scraps.  The pieces I made included a large dinosaur, some shirts, pants, a skirt, a ballerina tutu, a vest, some hats and shoes, a pair of underwear, and accessories like sunglasses, a tie, and a bow.

The contents of this play set.
Put the pieces together and you can make some wonderful dinosaurs like these:

A rockin' ballerina.
An explorer.
A little "Risky Business", anyone?!
Well, J loves, loves, loves this dress up dinosaur.  In fact, J is becoming quite the master of the layering technique.

Shirt, underwear, and now some shoes.

Now for some pants.

And how about an upside down tutu?

As for K, he apparently had better things to do...

K is too busy with a calculator

Thank you to Asia for having me guest post today and thank you for reading.  Be sure to check out my blog And Next Comes L, join my Facebook page, or follow us on Pinterest.

Please always supervise your infant/child at play.  Please stay within arms reach and never leave infants/children unattended.

  1. Hi, my kids love dinosaurs too so this could be fun for them to play with together (sometimes it's hard to find activities to engage both at the same time - he's 5 1/2, she's 2). My question is do the clothing items etc stick on or does the child need to hold them up? If they stick, what do you use - tape? velcro?

    1. Felt boards are so fun because felt naturally adheres to itself. It takes a few tries sometimes, to get the right system down, but generally lightly patting works well. When S was around 18 months, it was hard for her to get the felt pieces to stick together, but once she was 2 years old she had enough dexterity to do it herself. So no tape or velcro needed! Just the felt. Pretty fun, right? :)
