Baby Play: Exploring the Kitchen (Part Two)

After X's exploration of kitchen utensils and bowls in Exploring the Kitchen Part One, I decided to make a Part Two the next day using items that represented the different textures found in a kitchen.

I was surprised by how many different textures there were!  I decided to tape everything down to discourage mouthing.  Please note if you are doing this activity with a baby, they will need to be very closely supervised as these items could present choking risk and are not intended to be consumed.  From left to right, I laid out and taped down:  wax paper, foil, plastic wrap, paper towel, plastic grocery bag, paper grocery bag, and parchment paper.

I set X down on the mat and he immediately dove for the shiny foil.  He liked the crinkly noise it made when he touched it, and I'm assuming he also enjoyed the reflective shine.

Next he tried out the wax paper.  He felt it and crinkled it a bit before deciding that the foil was better at both.  :)

Despite being really delicate with it, a small chunk happened to tear off.  I reminded him it was not for eating and sat very close by monitoring as he brought it closer to him for a more detailed inspection.

He did hesitantly try to taste it, but mostly stuck to exploring it.

After spending quite some time twisting, touching, and crinkling the foil, he spied the giant paper bag....and fell in love.

No.  Really.  In love.  He's actually kissing the bag right here.  I have no idea why!  He lay there cooing at it, and kicking his little feet in delight for quite some time.

And now a hug for the paper bag.  Oh my.  So much love.

After pouring his heart out to the paper bag, we finally convinced him to check out the other textures.  He very quickly inspected the others, spending just a few moments with each.

Because ultimately, no matter how crinkly or unique the other textures were, they were just not as good as a paper bag.
